AMD to Launch Socket M2 Processors in 2006

DigiTimes reports that Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) plans to launch a series of 940-pin Socket M2 CPUs – a dual-core processor codenamed Windsor and the single-core Orleans and Manila processors – in the second quarter of 2006.

The dual-core Windsor CPUs will be part of AMD’s Athlon 64 X2 line, whereas the Orleans will be featured in the Athlon 64 series with the Manila to be part of the Sempron processor line, according to the makers.

With the upcoming release of AMD’s new Socket-M2 CPUs, Socket-939 CPUs are expected to be phased out by the chipmaker in the second quarter of 2007, according to the motherboard makers.

Ced's Note:
As a fan of budget PCs, I have been waiting (or hoping) for the Socket 939 Semprons to be released. It seems that there will never be a Socket 939 Sempron, but a line of Socket 940 Semprons instead. These Semprons will be using DDR2 memory, and probably new chipsets from NVidia and Via.

So what does this mean to "Value" PC enthusiasts?

For those presently using the Socket A platform who wants to upgrade their PC (or maybe build a new one) *now*, I suggest that you go for the Socket 754 64-bit Sempron, and a motherboard that supports PCI-Express & S-ATA. That way, you can still use your PCI-E display card and/or S-ATA drive when you decide to upgrade to the Socket 940 platform.

If you already are using a Socket 754 system, I suggest that you wait until the new 940 Semprons (and 940 motherboards) come out.
