Sharky Extreme reviews the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ and 4200+ processors.
The Athlon 64 X2 processors are a big hit with hardware enthusiasts, and for good reason. Not only does AMD offer high-end performance and a multi-tiered product line, but also seamless upgradeability with current Socket 939 platforms. The Athlon 64 X2 Manchester core processors may have half the L2 cache of the 1MB Toledo models, but this doesn't seem to hold it back in standard desktop and multimedia tasks. High-end gaming does give the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ and 4400+ an edge, but with all the cards on the table, it's very tough to beat the price-performance ratio of the Athlon 64 X2 4600+ and 4200+. If you always need to have the near cutting edge technology, and have the money to burn, these processors hit the right balance of price and performance. Don't forget to pickup a 7800 GTX display card along with your new processor. :)
If you are more of a budget hunter like me, I'd probably hold off the upgrade itch and wait for the Socket M2 (940 pin) processors and motherboards that utilize DDR2 memory.
