ExtremeTech tests the ATI Radeon HD 3870 graphics card on overclocking, anticipating a performance gain for the AMD Spider platform.
The test setup was as follows:
- graphics card: AMD ATI Radeon HD 3870 (Catalyst 8.1 drivers)
- motherboard: ASUS M3A32-MVP/Wi-Fi Edition
- CPU: AMD Phenom 9600 Black Edition
- memory: 2GB Corsair
- OS: Windows Vista Ultimate
"... we blasted the GPU and its memory subsystem as high as it would go, and one game out of four (and one test out of six, if you count the synthetics) showed any promise whatsoever. ... The bottom line is this: if you're an overclocker, the Spider platform, at least fitted with the AMD Phenom 9600 and the ATI Radeon HD 3870, is not the platform of choice. We've experienced far better yields with the current crop of CPUs from Intel ..." [ExtremeTech]
Hmm. The AMD Spider platform (which consists of an ATI 7-series chipset motherboard, a Phenom CPU, and an ATI Radeon 3000 series graphics card) is not yet "overclocking friendly".
