ExtremeTech and HardwareZone review graphics cards based on the ATI Radeon X1950 Pro (~US$200). The base specs are: 575MHz Core clock speed, 1.38GHz Memory clock speed, 256-bit memory bus, 36 Pixel shader processors, and 12 Rendering (Pixel) Pipelines.
"As a single card, the X1950 Pro is a real winner. It's a single slot card with plenty of DX9 shading power and performance, easily besting the GeForce 7900 GS in practically all our benchmarks-typically by 15% to 25%. If you're only interested in buying a single $200 graphics card, the X1950 Pro is the way to go. ... The dual-graphics scenario is a different story. ..." [Radeon X1950 Pro: The Evolution of CrossFire - ExtremeTech]
"... No doubt, it is faster than the card it aims to replace, the Radeon X1900 GT, but it really shines when placed besides its price rival from NVIDIA, the GeForce 7900 GS. For not only has ATI achieved a performance lead over a similarly priced rival, the low temperatures on the PowerColor seem to indicate that ATI's woes with heat and noise may be over at last with these new cores. Finally, the introduction of native CrossFire is a positive move that could lead to greater adoption of its multi-GPU platform over that of its rival and it also paves the way for future configurations involving more than two cards and even the much-hyped CrossFire physics." [PowerColor Radeon X1950 PRO 256MB - HardwareZone]
"... the ASUS was for the most part the performance equal of the PowerColor Radeon X1950 PRO, which was also slightly overclocked. It just goes to show that how ineffectual such 'overclocking' is in real life. However, we also found that the Radeon X1950 PRO seemed to be quite intolerant of overclocking, so enthusiasts will probably not have too much luck pushing this card. Other aspects of the ASUS fared generally on par with what we have seen with the PowerColor. But there are some things about the ASUS that may not bode well with some of you." [ASUS EAX1950PRO - HardwareZone]
If you are out to get an Nvidia graphics card based on the GeForce 7900 GS, you better take a look at Radeon X1950 PRO cards as well.
