X-bit Labs tests how much power modern graphics cards consume. The article compares power consumption of Entry-Level, Mainstream, High-End, & Premium cards from ATI, Nvidia, and S3.
In the performance-mainstream, mainstream and entry-level segments graphics cards based on ATI and Nvidia visual processing units consume about the same amount of power depending on their performance. There is nothing outstanding in those results, apart from very low power consumption of S3 Graphics' products, which offer performance similar to other entry-level graphics cards tested. [X-bit Labs]
A premium graphics card registered at a peak of 120.60 Watts consumption, while an entry-level card registered at a peak of 27.60 Watts.
This information would be very helpful when building a new system, or even just upgrading the graphics card. Remember, a powerful CPU and GPU would need an equally powerful PSU (Power Supply Unit).
